Michael Moore made a hit when he created "Fahrenheit 9/11" and was in keeping with his modus operandi in "outing" various government officials and businesses when discussing elements that he focused on during the documentary. Now, however, it seems the business side of things is heating up, as Moore has sued Harvey and Bob Weinstein, the two Hollywood power players who were behind the film. He is accusing them of "financial deception" and "Hollywood accounting tricks" that he claims left him $2.7 million short from the production of the film.
The lawsuit was filed Monday in Los Angeles Superior Court and in it Moore claims that the Weinsteins had agreed to split profits 50-50 with his entity, the Fellowship Adventure Group, but when it came time to divvy up the loot, his business partners hid money from him. The suit is being brought for breach of contract, breach of fiduciary duty and constructive fraud. In the suit, the claim is made that an audit of the books indicated "substantial irregularities in the accounting" that had an end result of "gross underpayment to [Moore]."
Predictably, an attorney for the Weinsteins noted that the claims were without merit, adding, "The Weinsteins have paid everything they should have paid. Mr. Moore has received a huge amount of money from this film and we believe he is overreaching. He should be ashamed of himself." Those comments, from attorney Bert Fields, are quite confusing when put into context. We are, after all, talking about Hollywood here, so shame really doesn’t come into play.
